Message from the Chair

CCEPR chairperson Susan Reed

CE planners and educators play an essential role in disseminating vital information and training to health care professionals in understanding and combatting the spread of COVID-19. To help support you in this important work, CCEPR has compiled links to resources regarding the coronavirus, safety, and clinical recommendations, as well as information for CE planners offered by our colleagues in other health professions.

In addition, the ADA has developed an interactive map summarizing continuing dental education requirements by state. The map is updated as the ADA becomes aware of changes to CE and licensure requirements, including those made in response to the pandemic. On behalf of the Commission, I sincerely thank you for all you do to help support our profession through education that is responsive to public and professional needs. We are all in this together.

Susan G. Reed, DDS, MPH, DrPH, 2019-2020 Chair

CERP Recognition Terms Extended

In response to potential business disruptions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Commission has extended the recognition terms of all CERP recognized providers by six months. Extensions are subject to providers’ eligibility to participate in the program and their meeting ADA CERP program requirements. Providers will also receive a six-month extension of their next due date for submitting applications for continued recognition, subject to the same conditions. View a published list of CERP providers’ updated recognition terms displaying the new recognition term end dates, and the corresponding dates for submitting applications for continued recognition. To help ensure timely receipt of re-application materials, please notify CCEPR staff promptly of any personnel changes.

CERP Eligibility Questionnaire Planned for 2020

Effective July 1, 2023, providers that are commercial interests, as defined by ADA CERP, will no longer be eligible for CERP recognition. Under the definition, CE providers that are owned or controlled by a commercial interest and deemed to be commercial interests will also no longer be eligible for CERP recognition.

To identify the providers that may be affected by this change, all currently recognized CERP providers will be required to complete an online questionnaire in the fourth quarter of 2020. The questionnaire will include items designed to identify whether a provider is a commercial interest, and as such, would not be eligible for CERP recognition beginning July 1, 2023. The Commission will review providers’ responses to the eligibility questionnaire and communicate its findings regarding their eligibility in 2021.

Providers that are identified as commercial interests may maintain their recognition status through June 30, 2023 by fulfilling normal program requirements. They may also choose to make changes to their organization or CE programs in order to meet the new CERP Eligibility Criteria.

The Commission has developed commercial interest self-assessment questions (PDF) to help providers identify whether they meet the ADA CERP definition of a commercial interest.

Each new applicant will also be required to complete a pre-application eligibility questionnaire to determine if the  applicant is a commercial interest.

Report of Commission’s April 2020 Meeting

The CCEPR Board of Commissioners met virtually on April 23, 2020, and considered 12 new applications for ADA CERP recognition, 56 applications for continued recognition, and 24 progress reports. The Commission granted initial recognition to 10 providers of continuing dental education, and continued recognition to 55 providers. The Commission issued one notice of intent to withdraw recognition, and discontinued recognition of six providers at the request of the providers. After taking these actions, 477 CE providers were CERP recognized as of April 23, 2020. This total includes 8 providers approved through Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education.
